AAW Woodturning shows over the years

Found this selection of pictures from past AAW shows around the shop. We are proud to be the only exibitor to attend all 22 annual symposiums. Have met alot of our best customers at these shows over the years.
Each year Mitch starts milling up wood for the show several weeks in advance and makes sure to only bring the nicest stock of the highest quality for our woodturners at the AAW symposium.
I think this one is in Louisville, Kentucky

This one was in Akron, Ohio
This one is at the Pasadena show in 2003.

Mitch and Marty are fighting over a special one of a kind snakewood wood turning gouge.
This show was a big one for us since it was only up the road in Los Angeles.

We brought up several slabs and full logs of snakewood, cocobolo and other spectalular species.

We even had a little gallery going on right there in the middle of our booth (see picture)

We brought up several turned pieces out of our woods since we didn't have to worry about damaging them.

I believe this one was in Portland
I think this one is way back in the late 80's in Philadelphia

This was At the Silent Auction in Fort Collins, Colorado back in '94

Mitch at the Provo show in '92.

*Please note the same Tropical Exotic Hardwood banner at every show. Its taken some beatings over the years (nothing a little duct tape can't fix) but its still going strong.
It was at the Richmond show in July and will be at Albuquerque show in 2009.

Here's a Good Read...

Here is a nice article by Woodshop news explaining the current situation of the distribution of Mahogany.

We normally do not carry Mahogany but Mitch does makes some exceptions from time to time especially when we come across some stock that is just too nice to pass up.

About a year ago we came across about 500bf of some old Genuine Mahogany that had been stored since the 1950's.

All the stock measures 2" thick x 12"+ wide x 9'+ long, and did we mention alot of the stock is quarter sawn!!!

We have numerous people call us everyday asking about Mahogany and after we tell them about our old stock, they seem to always say "why don't you carry Guatmalan Mahognay, what's the difference?". Well alot, to say the least.

Click on this link to read the article which hopefully clarifies why this batch of Genuine Honduran Mahogany is so special.

*Also check out the picture in the article of Mitch standing next to his prized slab of Cuban Mahogany.

Cocobolo Chest

By customer Ric Mazzetti. Cocobolo chest with a shadow box in the lid.
The piece speaks for itself. "Rosewood blanket chest".
Very nicely done!

Updated--Tasmanian Slabs #1-20

received a pair of book matched 8/4 slabs of Curly Eucalyptus. These pieces are highly figured and are natural edged. A bit of defect here and there, but would be a great distressed table.

This slab is amost 30" wide and 10 feet long, now thats a nice table!

Updated--Tasmanian Slabs #31-40

This is one of the numerous sets of Bookmatched Rose myrtle slabs. Together your looking at about 3 feet in width, natural edge on both sides and mirror images of the mixed curly figure, this would be a great dining table.

If you are looking for length these next few are nice options. Very nice curly figure throughout the slabs. These particular pieces are alot blonder than most of the Rose Myrtle that we have in stock. If that pinkish-red hue isn't really what your looking for, these are good lighter-colored alternatives with the same great figure.

Bookmatched Sets- Tasmanian Slabs # 41-50

Bookmatched Sets of Tasmanian Rose Myrtle. Both sides Natural Edge with amazing figure in every board. Each piece runs about 15-19" wide depending on the set (please refer to the dimensions on the pictures), so your looking at a solid table about 29-36" wide once that are finished. These have been mostly sold for dining tables but have also been milled up into numerous matching end tables. Nice and dry and easy to finish. Sold as sets

Nice set of Rose Myrtle. Very clean natural edges if thats the look your after.

Updated--Tasmanian Slabs #70-99

We know this one isn't numerically in between #70-99, but its one that got away from us and never was included in the original post.

Sorry, we have so much wood here its hard to keep track of it all.

Updated--Tasmanian Slabs #B2-B8

All of the #B Slabs are gorgeous Rose Myrtle Crotch Slabs (please see picture above). Once the pieces are sanded down the feathery figure really jumps out. The crotch is any area on the trunk of a tree where it split into two or more limbs. On many of these high end exotics, this is where the most figure is usually found.

#B7 is a real nice one. Its nice and wide but only 53" long, which makes it perfect for a coffetable or can be split up into multiple matching pieces for side tables. Along the center of the piece you will find gorgeous feathery curly crotch figure. And like most of our slabs, we do not incorporate highly defective sections in the measurements of the wood. So all your paying for is good wood.

Another Gorgeous Box by Dean Moore

In this piece were looking at quilted maple on the top, cocobolo rosewood around the edges and Fiddleback Tasmanian Eucalyptus on the sides.

This is a good one for anyone who wants some curl but is skeptical about using anything other than maple. As you can see by finished product, Fiddleback Eucalyptus looks great.

"Between Heaven and Earth"

By customer Christian Burchard using some of our Cocobolo. Photo given to us back in 1996. We have seen some really interesting projects over the years, especially out of our cocobolo rosewood.
