SALE ON ALL PRIMAVERA TURNING SQUARES

Primavera is a relatively inexpensive exotic wood that is great to work with and has an appearance which earned it the nickname “white mahogany.”

Primavera workability is exceptional. It works easily with hand tools, holds nails and screws well, and glues without difficulty. Primavera can be stained and polished to a very good finish.

Prima vera (Tabeuia donnell-smithii) is found in the coastal areas of Southwestern Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

-bowl done by Jerry Brownrigg

The heartwood is cream colored, sometimes yellow white to light brown, and often difficult to distinguish from the sapwood. Primavera’s grain is straight to interlocked and wavy. Quartered surfaces often offer a striped figure.

In certain figured pieces of primavera it has the same amber color like Ceylon satinwood with the bee’s wing figure. It isn’t overpowering, pleasant to look at it, and reflects light well. The older it gets, the patina comes off of it and it takes on a deeper amber apperance.

***In areas where primavera grows, natives have long believed the trees should be cut based on the lunar cycle. It is said that sap levels rise to their highest level with a full moon, and fall to lowest levels when there is a new moon

Highly Figured Bocote Knife handle

Knife handle done by customer Bud Meltsner. He purchased a 2"x4"x48" piece of exceptionally figured Bocote and this is a project from that stock.

We still have a few pieces of 2" lumber with some of the tightest, most intense figure we have ever seen in Bocote.

We lucked out on our last shipment from our mill as we also recieved some very figured Pommele cocobolo as well
-all those pieces sold in the first week, sorry...

Exotic Wood Boxes by Dean Moore

This Jewelery box by Dean Moore, won the American Woodworker "Love of Wood" award at this years Design in Wood exhibit at the 2008 San Diego County Fair.

As you can see Dean carefully selected a very unique piece of cocobolo lumber and combined it with some very figured flamed Koa. We think the combination worked out perfectly.
Here we see a box made out of primarily figured Walnut but with some accent pieces of other woods as well such as Ebony. Look at how all the different figures and colors go together nicely.

This one is made of granadillo. We have carried granadillo for years but it never really was a big seller. Since no one had really heard of it, every one wanted to stick to the well known woods . We had three lifts of the wood in the back that had been at the shop for well over 10 years. Recently people have started to notice the beauty of the wood and have started to purchase it like crazy. We still have some lumber left and hopefully will be receiving more in the near future.

This is a fiddleback Eucalyptus humidor with a quilted maple top. I believe there is also some Cocobolo in the mix as well. People are very hesitant when we tell them about the fiddleback Eucalyptus, they always want curly maple. Like the granadillo example, this box shows that there are hundreds of different woods out there that look amazing. Curly maple isn't the only curly wood out there. As you can see by this box, curly isn't a problem here. But if you do want curly maple and that's what tickles your fancy, we did just received a batch of 5/4 curly maple that will knock your socks off.

Here's another one that demonstrates how different combinations of woods really look visually appealing in boxes.
Look at the quilted Bubinga top lined with curly maple. Really looks nice. Can you imagine sticking a strip of snakewood ,curly pernambuco, ceylon satinwood, figured purpleheart?

Snakewood Logs

piratinera guianensis, snakewood comes from a small tree found in the forests of Suriname, South America

The appearance of snakewood is much like its name implies- that of a snakeskin or spotty like leopard spots. The heartwood is reddish-brown with black accents or vertical lines. It is very hard and heavy but is capable of a beautiful finish as it polishes out nicely.

Snakewood is mostly used to make drumsticks, rattles, pens, knife handles, violin bows, pool cues, archery bows and is used in inlay work and marquetry

The following pictures are of full logs that we have here at shop. Dimensions and weights are on each picture.

#A- SOLD, Thanks

Cocobolo Home-Projects

Here are a few projects by some of our customers out of our Cocobolo Rosewood. Whether its a small writing pen or a large counter top, Cocobolo looks amazing. At least we think so...

Mitch wishes this was in his bathroom, he picked a slab of Padouk instead. It looks nice but its no Cocobolo.
