Want to see a rare piece of Mexican Cocobolo?
Sometimes we get a little too attached to certain pieces here at the shop.
This unique piece of Cocobolo (pictured above) just sold to one lucky customer in Texas.
(In case you are wondering-it measures 2" x 16" x 46"!)
Although we are very happy that it is going to a client who appreciates its rarity, it was a little sad bundling this piece up knowing just how unique it really is.
What makes it so rare?
Mexican Cocobolo grows much slower than the Central American varieties as a result of lower rainfall and other different growing conditions. Although this slower growth leads to the tighter grain that makes Mexican cocobolo the preferred choice among woodworkers, it also results in relatively small trees that typically only yield lumber 3-8" wide.
Any lumber that is over 8" in width is considered rare and usually requires a choice log with minimal defects.
This particular piece is 16" wide-twice the width of a piece we would consider "rare"!
As if the amazing width wasn't enough, it is also pretty much defect free, contains no sapwood and has great color and grain. What an amazing piece of wood!
We have asked the client to send us pictures of his finished piece once he is done.
We can't wait to see how it turns out!
(we will post the pictures on our blog/facebook once we receive them!)
What would you have used this piece for?

Why we love Parota!
Just look at these images!
Parota speaks for itself once sanded and oiled.
Here are some shots of a small straight edged Parota slab right after it had been coated with tung oil here at the shop.
Below are a few shots of us applying the oil to the freshly sanded slab.
The two parota slabs pictured below are out of the same flitch (sequence of cuts) as the finished slab.
Isn't it amazing how much this wood livens up once finished?
Parota has it all-
Amazing figure, fantastic color, easy workability and unmatched low-cost.
Just an all around great exotic species.
If the smaller slab pictured above cleaned up that nicely, can you imagine what this large tabletop will look like once it's finished?
Interested in this wood?
Pick out your future Parota tabletop on the "Slabs" page of your website.
Whether it's a Dining table, bartop, or cabinets, our sawmill direct Parota seems to be a big hit with all clients who try it out.
Feel free to contact us if you need help picking one out to fit your needs.

Chechen Drum by Joshua Tree Percussion
Tom Wolfe of Joshua Tree Percussion dropped by the shop about a month ago to pick up some wood and to show us another one of his amazing custom drums.
This time around we have a gorgeous piece out of some of our Chechen lumber. Also known as "Caribbean Rosewood" (not a true rosewood species but with similar characteristics), Chechen is a relatively dense wood with great color, grain and workability.
Tom took advantage of our recent load of 4/4 Chechen lumber that is 40% off our regular price and made a stunning drum that we are sure many of you would love to own!
Check out his website for other great pictures of his amazing pieces-
www.jtpercussion.com
Next up-
Last week Tom picked up same amazing pieces of Macassar Ebony (that we currently have on clearance for only $20/BF!). We can't wait to see the finished pieces!

Bubinga Shadow Box by Cory Hubbard
Customer Cory Hubbard sent us a handful of pictures of his recently completed Bubinga Shadow Box.
From Cory's email-
"...The box's approximate dimensions are 44"x13"x5.5". I built a jig to cut the corners and inlaid some red oak for strength and some cosmetic enhancement. To finish it off, I installed some chrome hinges and flush mounted some 2lb cabinet magnets to the door. The drive shaft you see inside is a tail rotor drive shaft from a helicopter. The handles are climb handles from an air craft as well."
We remember Cory purchasing this gorgeous piece of 4/4 Bubinga lumber.
Bubinga is a dense exotic from West Africa that is easy to work and is available in large dimensions.
Very economically priced for an exotic, it is perfect for a wide range of projects.
We typically have a healthy supply of both 4/4 and 8/4 lumber in stock at all times but can also bring in larger quantities if needed (we are in the process of supplying 5,500 BF for a customer)
Need more than 50BF of stock?
Make sure to take advantage of our February Special!
10% off all orders of 50BF or more of exotic lumber (able to mix and match species as well)
Need even more material? (i.e. 300BF+)
Contact us directly if you are interested in purchasing larger quantities.
We are very good about giving competitive large volume prices and are able to supply a large assortment of species at all times.
Click on the following link to see some of the great exotic species we have to offer (remember to contact us if you do not see the species you are after. If the order is large enough we can usually bring it in specifically for you!)

Swiss Pear and Asian Striped Ebony Cabinets by Nilson Winter Construction
Here is a great example of why we love Swiss Pear so much-
Just look at the amazing color and grain on this wood!
Swiss Pear is definitely one of those species that you have to try yourself to truly appreciate how nice it really is.
Jeff Nilson of Nilson Winter Construction complemented the bookmatched Swiss pear raised panels with grain matched the rails and stiles out of Asian Striped Ebony and used black Gaboon Ebony for the handles.
Although we love the way the ebony turned out, we think the Swiss pear panels are by far the highlight of the piece.
We'll let the following pictures do the rest of the talking
Amazing work Jeff!

Before & After-Highly Figure Bocote
Its always fun to dig through a stack, find some neat pieces and watch them come alive once we surface them on the thickness planer.
Bocote almost never disappoints-tight grain, great color, can beat this material!
These pieces are listed on the Online Store if you want to take a look
