Cocobolo canine statue by Chris Kaiser of Abiszet Creations

Chris dropped by the shop today to pick up some more Extra-Wide Cocobolo lumber for his hand crafted Saluki, Whippet and Afghan Hound statues.

He also brought in one of his best-selling designs to show us.

Amazing looking piece!

Chris uses a wide range of exotics which includes Ebony, Zebrawood, Purpleheart and Chechen but he says his favorite wood to work with (and best-selling as well) is our Mexican Cocobolo.

Cleaning up some Cocobolo crotch sections

Great for turning or can be used as coffee table bases with a glass top.

We have had numerous clients inquire about the Cocobolo log section that we posted about a week ago , so we decided to clean up some other similar pieces here at the shop.

Updated photos of the crotch sections will be posted online within the next few days...

Cocobolo/Steel desk by Gary Hunt

We love Gary's simple and functional design for his desktop.

Sometimes there is no need to over-complicate the construction (especially when using gorgeous hand selected pieces of Cocobolo!)

1/4" hot rolled steel plate tops matched with 8/4 extra-wide Cocobolo lumber for the legs.

Highly Figured Cocobolo Squared Log!

We just received this beauty!

7" x 8" x 26.5" squared crotch log of Mexican Cocobolo.

This is a prefect example of why Mexican Cocobolo is such a higher grade wood than Central American varieties. Tighter grain, better color, etc. Just overall much better material to work with.

Below are some pictures of the squared log after we coated it with wax to protect it (good indication of the finished color) and right after we cleaned it up to look at the figure.

Will post on the Online Store in the next day or so (unless it sells before then)

Just waxed the ends of the cocobolo logs that we posted a few days ago.
Look at the color on these two!
Should only look nicer with a proper finish.

Design in Wood "Sponsor's Choice Perpetual Trophy" winner Bob Marnul stops by the shop...

Bob recently stopped by the shop to pick up some new exotics for numerous different projects he is working on.

Many of you might recognize Bob's cocobolo armoire that was on display at this year's Design in Wood exhibit at the San Diego County fair.

Bob's piece won the 2011 "Sponsor's Choice Perpetual Trophy" that is currently on display here at our shop.

Cocobolo log section

Amazing growth rings on this old log of cocobolo.
Makes you wonder what caused it to grow in that manner. Pretty neat!

So we saw this dirty piece of cocobolo in the back and decided to see if we could clean it up.

Many of you might remember the batch of Highly Figured Cocobolo we received about two months ago.

It was some of the most intensely figured stock we have ever seen in the 39 years we have been cutting cocobolo!

If you missed out on picking up a piece, here is your second chance!

We currently got a hold of one piece from the same batch measuring 1" (surfaced to 13/16" thick) x 7.5" x 60"

Guitars by Dean Moore

Customer Dean Moore recently sent us these beautiful pictures of some acoustic guitars he just finished using some of our Bocote and Cocobolo.

Dean used to live about 30 minutes north of us in San Clemente, Ca and was always a frequent visitor to our shop whenever he had some extra time to drive down.

You may remember us posting images of his gorgeous jewelry boxes a few years back.

Recently Dean and his wife relocated to Pacific Northwest and he now fully dedicates his time to guitar making.

Below are some images of two of his guitars along with his insight into the workability of Bocote and Cocobolo as a luthier grade tone wood-

From Dean's email-

"....here are two in my current collection which are made from sets I got from you just before leaving SoCal - Bocote and Cocobolo...the glue-up and finishing process is about the same (Bocote and Cocobolo) from what I can tell. The Bocote is a little difficult to glue just like the Cocobolo so the same preparations apply although the Bocote does not seem to be quite as oily or resinous as the Cocobolo. Even so, I found it helpful to wash the glue joints with acetone before gluing just as I do with Cocobolo. I also find that the glued joint is stronger if the mating surfaces are not sanded finer than 150 grit with all woods but especially with woods like Bocote and Cocobolo..."

Cocobolo Turning Squares.

Here again, as we continue our preparation for our Annual Parking Lot Sale, we are arranging things here at the shop and have our Cocobolo Turning Squares rather organized for the most part.

We have a healthy supply of Squares ranging from our best selling 1.5" and 2.0" squares, to 2.5", 3.0", 3.5", 4.0", 5.0" and a couple of 6.0".

We are continuing to offer our "Flat Rate" packs with shipping included on some of them, which you can find in our Online Store.
