Parota Fireplace Mantle by Robert Trujillo

Customer Robert Trujillo dropped by the shop to show us his Parota mantle that is nearly complete.

So far we think the piece looks amazing and we can't wait to see the finished project after it has been installed.

Robert used basic box construction to create the mantle out of 4/4 Parota Lumber and will be using a clear finish once it is done.

The neat thing about Robert bringing by his parota mantle is that it coincided with another customer Richard Howell showing us one of his carved wood mantles the same day.

Richard is an amazing artist who specializes in 3D and bas relief carvings and always drops by to show us his latest projects.

Recently Robert has begun to concentrate on home decor and has been producing intricately designed fireplace mantles and carved bases/legs for tables (see image below for an example of one of his creative coffee table bases).

Since we know many clients are always on the look out for neat table bases to match up with the large natural edged slabs they purchase from us, we have asked Robert to carve a sample piece that we will have permanently on display here at the shop.

Look out for a update once he has delivered it, we are sure it will look amazing.

If you are interested in seeing what Richard can do for your next home project, please see his website for more pictures and his contact info-

USS "California" Teak Decking Cribbage Board!

Customer Eric Jensen from Toledo, Ohio sent us these pictures of a recently completed cribbage board he constructed using teak decking off of the USS "California".

Very Cool!

Here is some info on the teak decking-

-Commissioned in 1919, decommissioned 1947, scraped 1959
-Attacked & sunk at Pearl Harbor in 1941, raised and repaired a year later, used in WWII and Korea
-This teak was cut almost 100 years ago!!!

Below are some pictures of our remaining stock of the teak decking we have here at the shop.

As you can see it is all 2" x 4" material with holes roughly every 24" where the deck was fastened.

Most boards are in the 6-8 foot range but we usually have a couple shorter pieces floating around.

Contact us for more information or order the decking directly on our Online Store by clicking here.

1.5 Mexican Kingwood Turning Squares!

We just found this bundle of 1.5 inch x 1.5 inch x 17 inch squares of Mexican Kingwood.

We milled them up about a year ago and forgot that we had them stashed in the back.

Great looking stock that was milled specifically for Billiard cues.

Obviously would be great for other projects as well.

Mexican kingwood is a high end rosewood species that is prized for its tight grain and deep purple color.

The picture above is of a stack of kingwood logs. This is a good indication of how small these trees are.

Here is a picture of some freshly milled blanks of Mexican Kingwood.

Look at that color!

If you are interested in the 1.5 inch x 1.5 inch x 17 inch squares we have about 12 of them for $15 a piece.

Want to save a little cash and don't mind doing a little milling yourself?

Purchase a full log for $24.50/BF! That's about 40% off our regular price.

Coolibah Burl Bass Guitar by Customer James Dellaneve

Customer James Dellaneve recently dropped by the shop to pick up some wood for his next project and also brought by this neat electric bass he constructed using some of our wood.

The body and headstock are out of a coolibah burl cap he purchase from us a while back.

Coolibah is tight grained burl we occasionally import from Australia along with other neat burl species such as Tasmanian Eucalyptus, Brown Mallee, Jarrah and Rose Myrtle.

We always have a healthy supply of burl material in assorted dimensions including the large caps pictured below. These species are a great choice for a variety of woodworking projects because of their figure, workability and low-cost compared to other high-end burls.

Let us know if have any questions, these things are pretty!

Black Acacia Table by Tassajara Designs

Many of you may remember the natural edged Black Acacia slabs pictured above.
Also know as Australian Blackwood, Black Acacia is a related species to Hawaiian Koa with similar density and figure.
Below is a finished table created by Michael Wells of Tassajara Design using the top slab as the table top and using the smaller slabs in the construction of the base-

Here are some details on the table:
Material - Tasmanian Black Acacia top, base and braces. Zircote dutchmen inlays.
Dimensions - 38"W x 72"L x 30"H
Finish - Hand-rubbed Maloof Poly-Oil finish
Design - Nakashima "Minguren"-inspired desk
The neat thing about this table is that it was entirely created (other than the dutchman) out of material from the same flitch of slabs.
Mike was able to incorporate all the natural features of each slab and create a cohesive piece that we think looks amazing!
