Mesquite Log.

A customer of ours inquired about a Mesquite Log we have here at the shop and wanted to know what the end grain would look like...

This gave us a good excuse to make a few cuts on it and...

This is what we end up with (It's nice to take on little projects like this every now and then and see "beneath the surface" of some of these pieces).

Wet the ends slightly and... Look at the color of this log!

We thought we'd share this with y'all. Let us know what YOU think.

Design in Wood-Sponsor's Choice Perpetual Trophy

The 2011 "Design in Wood" event organizer Bob Stevenson recently dropped off the "Sponsor's Choice" trophy to our shop.

The oak trophy, which was created by Bob many years ago, is presented annually in conjunction with the San Diego Fine Woodworkers to one lucky recipient during the "Design in Wood" exhibit at the San Diego county fair. The trophy is engraved with the names of past winners dating back to the mid 1980's and contains a neat 160 year old smooth plane donated by Bob himself! (see image below)

This year we were lucky enough to be chosen to present the "Sponsor's Choice" perpetual trophy and had the opportunity to select a piece of our choice that we thought displayed excellent craftsmanship and creative wood selection.

Although there were numerous pieces that caught our eye, Bob Marnul's highly figured cocobolo armoire definitely stood out among the rest. (see image below) Although we are suckers for Cocobolo, Bob's unique design was what really impressed us. Just beautiful bookmatched pieces of Cocobolo in an intricately designed yet somewhat functional piece of furniture, we just loved it!

The trophy will be on display at our shop until next year's exhibit, so please feel free to drop by the warehouse anytime to check it out in person.

Don't miss the "Design In Wood" exhibit at this year's San Diego County Fair!

We will be presenting the "Sponsor's Choice" perpetual trophy at this year's "Design in Wood" exhibit.

This past Saturday we had the opportunity to stroll through the exhibit and get a sneak peek of all the neat pieces that will be on display this year.

Below is just a small sample of what will be at this year's show (we highly recommend attending if you are in the area!)

This exhibit will be running June 10th-July 4th
For more information, please visit-
http://www.sdfair.com/

For us, it's always great to see all the diverse woodworking talent and we always get a kick out of seeing our wood in finished pieces.

Although all the name tags were covered during the judging, we could identify a few of the designs the moment we walked in the door. Here is another great piece by our friend Terry Hanson.

Here is the front of the exhibit at the fairgrounds in sunny Del Mar, California.

There we are up on the wall!

Pretty much any woodworking genre is on display at this year's exhibit-woodturning, carving, furniture, you name it! It's all here for you to admire!

Here is a neat piece with some of our Buckeye burl as the base (I think the carved dolphins are out of our Goncalo Alves as well, but I am not 100% sure)

This is one of our favorites. As you all probably already know, we are suckers for good-looking pieces of Cocobolo. We started drooling when we saw this beauty!

Just look at the figure on the wood that was used in this cabinet, amazing!

Even the handles look good!

If you thought the outside looked good, wait until you look at the inside!

We will leave it at the that, you will have to drop by the show and check it out in person.

Just an amazing piece!

Woodturning as far as the eye can see!

That first one pictured above is by our good friend Pete Campbell, it measures about 20-24" in diameter and is about 1/8" thick all the way through!

More great turned pieces!

Here is a piece by our friend John Beaver out of our cocobolo. Make sure to check out his article in the latest issue of American Woodturner, I believe this piece is pictured.

Here is a piece using some of our Spalted Alder.

Lots of talented people out there!

Looks like someone got a hold of some of our USS battleship teak decking!

Neat piece!

How about this for a unique design?! Aptly named "A river runs through it"...

This piece is about 7' wide and 6' tall!

No shortage of fancy rocking chairs at this year's fair.

If guitars are your thing, plenty of those on display as well.

Here is the perpetual trophy we will be presenting to one lucky exhibitor (It will be on display at our shop after the fair along with a picture of the winning piece!)

Again, this year's exhibit will be a good one. If you can make it down to San Diego, make sure to drop by the fair and look at the pieces in person.

Bowl Lathe for Sale-Great Price!

We just picked up this neat Vega bowl lathe yesterday.

Great compact lathe that can handle a 23" in diameter bowl. Good choice for someone who wants to turn larger bowls but doesn't want the lathe to take up too much space.

Here are some specs on the lathe:
-Vega model #24
-3/4 HP motor
-Multiple speed (200-2900 RPM)
-Safety shield

Fully functional in pretty good condition (has a little surface rust that can easily be lightly sanded off)

$350.00 (These go for about $1500 brand new)

SOLD

Give us a call if you are interested in it.

Pretty pieces of lumber at discounted prices in our "one-off" rack!

This is a section of our lumber rack where we group unique pieces from prior loads and discount them by 10%.

Some of these pieces are really neat and hard to find.

If you don't mind digging through the lift, there are some real gems at great prices that can be used for a variety if projects.

There is a little bit of everything in the rack- figured exotics, domestics (see pic of claro walnut above), crotch, small slabs, etc.

Some of our clients only concentrate on this rack when they drop by the shop knowing that they can find some great pieces at great prices.

Check out this pieces pictured above-

10 foot piece of "real" genuine mahogany from the 1950's. This is the golden brown tight grained stuff and not that salmon colored junk that most wood shops try to pass off as mahogany. And at 10% off you can't beat it!

We aren't going to lie- some pieces have cracks and are oddly shaped, but we figure at the right price there is a use for everything here at the shop.

(At 14 inches wide and at a discounted price, we are sure one or two of you can find a use for the pretty piece of zebrawood pictured above!)

Feel free to drop by the shop and dig through the rack to see what you can find. If you don't know where to look, just ask for the "one off" rack and we will point you in the right direction.
