Koa Paddles by Mana Paddleworks

Steven Bogdonoff of Mana Paddleworks just dropped by the shop to pick up 10BF of our April koa short lumber special for some upcoming paddles.

Mana Paddleworks combines Koa with other exotics from around the world to create one of a kind pieces that accurately depict similar ancient Hawaiian paddles.

They make really neat pieces, check out the image below to see some example of what they do.



Below are a few images of the 10BF of Koa Steven just picked up along with a few other goodies he will incorporate into his paddles. They should turn out great!

Bocote Japanese Pull Saw Handle by Paul Mattlin

Paul sent us these images of a bocote handle he added to a Japanese pull saw.

This type of saw is used in traditional Japanese woodworking and carpentry. These saws cut very quickly and easily on the pull stroke unlike European saws that cut on the push stroke. They also allow for thinner blades that cut more efficiently and leave a narrower kerf.

Pretty neat, huh?!

Design in Wood 2011 (entry deadline coming up!)

Just a reminder that the "Design in Wood" entry deadline for the 2011 San Diego County Fair is April 29th.

If you have a piece that you would like to enter, feel free to register online at www.sdfair.com/entry or you can also pick up a mail-in registration form here at our shop

Whether or not you will be submitting a piece this year, we highly recommend you visit this amazing annual woodworking exhibit that will be running June 10th to July 4th 2011.

Here is some more info on this year's "Design in Wood" exhibit-

• 22 different classes (ranging from fine furniture to musical instruments to wood turning-something for everyone!)

• Over $20,000 in cash awards for this year's exhibit (now do you want to enter?!)

• Up to three entries may be submitted per entrant! (all classes combined)

• Sell your work while it is on display! (Indicate a sale price on the entry form and have potential clients contact you to purchase!)

Parota Bathroom Countertop by Denis Meyniel

Denis just sent us these great images of a Parota Round that was used as a countertop in a powder room.

Richard Howell's Latest Creation

Richard dropped by the shop with this neat carving out of some of our Parota lumber.

Check out the last picture for an example of a what he started with.
Isn't it amazing how much Parota just lights up with a finish?

The color and grain of Parota makes it a fantastic choice for a variety of wood projects such as tables, cabinets, or in this case carvings.

New Round Of 4/4 Clearance Macassar Ebony is Here!

Just a reminder, our latest batch of clearance Macassar Ebony just came in the door.

We know many of you require a full 1" for your projects so we wanted to inform you before we begin to thickness plane the new pieces.

We normally surface the 4/4 pieces, take close-up pictures and list them on our Online Store, but the finished thickness after we run them through our planer tends to end up being closer to 3/4".

These pieces are a full 1" right now unsurfaced (maybe a 16" under at most).

Lengths range from roughly 30" up 84" and widths are about 3" to 6".

We have roughly 100BF in this latest load.
