Customer Chris Crowley dropped by the shop and showed us his Parota Handplane.
We know most woodworkers think of a "handplane" as a hand held tool that is used to flatten rough pieces of lumber, but this type of "handplane" is very different.
These handplanes are used to bodysurf and recently many clients have been making them out of a variety of woods-primarily redwood, balsa and parota.

Chris with his Parota HandplaneParota seems to be getting the best reviews as a result of its light weight, high durability, and attractive grain.
Many people have referred to it as a good alternative to Hawaiian Koa and like how it is available in larger dimensions that are nearly impossible to find in Koa.
The price of Parota is also worth noting. At as little as $10.00/BF, Parota is a no brainer for projects that require an attractive species at a low cost.
Parota-inexpensive alternative to Hawaiian Koa
We always have a good variety of Parota Lumber in stock here at the shop including 4/4, 8/4, 12/4 and 16/4 thicknesses.
4/4 Parota lumber
Obviously Parota is an excellent choice for many other applications.
Cabinetry, furniture, interior trim and joinery are just some its other uses.
Looks like Koa, doesn't it?
It is by far our best selling wood and is a favorite among our repeat customers.
