Bocote Squares.

How about our Bocote Turning Squares this time around?
We need to clean these up too!

Here's a cart full of our thicker material.
(2.5", 3.0", 4.0" and a couple of 5.0" squares)

A few passes through the planer and...

Look at the figure of some of these pieces!

How about these 12" long squares!

Don't miss out on these, we do not have many thick squares left.
Perfect for all sort of projects and they seem pretty dry as well.

Keep an eye out. We may be showcasing them in our Online Store.
Or, as you all may know, feel free to stop by the shop or call us with further inquiries.

Goncalo Alves

We went through a lift of Goncalo Alves (Tigerwood) billets...

And we cleaned up some of them on our planer to show off on our sale.

It's nice when you can see the wood through the rough cuts.

Also replenished some of our bowl stock of this material.

We have some 3" and 4" thick material with some really nice contrasting patterns.
And, don't forget... We do have 4/4 lumber as well!

Call us or stop by the shop!

Getting the tools ready... And after several passes, a cloud of sawdust, and a workout...

Look at the grain popping out when you wet it!!!

Nice light tone wood, with dark contrasting streaks, and beautiful live edge. We believe it is a gorgeous Slab!

Large Walnut Crotch Slab Available!

We wanted to give all our blog followers and facebook friends advanced notice on a neat Walnut slab that will be added to our website within the next week.

A customer of ours purchased this large Bastogne Walnut crotch slab roughly a year ago to use as a tabletop but ended up using a different piece of wood for the project instead. Recently he asked us to help him sell it here at the shop.

Large figured Walnut slabs are tough to find, so we know many of you will be excited about this one!

Some information on the Walnut slab-

roughly-49" at the narrowest, 67" at the widest, 65" long and 2 3/4" thick
(Probably figure 2" when completely flattened)

The pictures below show the slab unsurfaced and in the rough when in first arrived at our shop about a year ago. The customer has since had the slab partially flattened and has allowed it to dry in a solar kiln for about six months to a year. The slab has moved a bit during the drying process and will need to be resurfaced to make it completely flat again. (As mentioned above, plan on about a 2" finished thickness once it is re-sanded)

According to the customer, the slab is at about 14% moisture content(taken from three different places on the slab with a moisture meter at about a 1/2" depth). Plan on a little more moisture towards the core of the slab, but overall this a pretty dry for a slab for a chunk of Walnut this large.

$2950.00

Feel free to contact us if you have any questions or would like to purchase the slab before we add it to the website.

Ziricote Billets

It's amazing what a little cleaning up can do to the wood.
Check out these Ziricote billets! Here are the before and after pictures.

(3 Ziricote billets in the rough and all waxed up.)

A few passes through the jointer, a thin slice from the ends and...

(This is what they end up looking like after all this.)

We have these pieces already listed on our Online Store if you'd like to view more pictures.

Otherwise, feel free to stop by the shop and look at these and much more!
We have also resawn some 2" and 1.5" squares of different woods!

Design in Wood-Sponsor's Choice Perpetual Trophy

The 2011 "Design in Wood" event organizer Bob Stevenson recently dropped off the "Sponsor's Choice" trophy to our shop.

The oak trophy, which was created by Bob many years ago, is presented annually in conjunction with the San Diego Fine Woodworkers to one lucky recipient during the "Design in Wood" exhibit at the San Diego county fair. The trophy is engraved with the names of past winners dating back to the mid 1980's and contains a neat 160 year old smooth plane donated by Bob himself! (see image below)

This year we were lucky enough to be chosen to present the "Sponsor's Choice" perpetual trophy and had the opportunity to select a piece of our choice that we thought displayed excellent craftsmanship and creative wood selection.

Although there were numerous pieces that caught our eye, Bob Marnul's highly figured cocobolo armoire definitely stood out among the rest. (see image below) Although we are suckers for Cocobolo, Bob's unique design was what really impressed us. Just beautiful bookmatched pieces of Cocobolo in an intricately designed yet somewhat functional piece of furniture, we just loved it!

The trophy will be on display at our shop until next year's exhibit, so please feel free to drop by the warehouse anytime to check it out in person.

Turned Pieces by John Beaver

John Beaver's Artist Statement from his website-

"I enjoy including a certain "how did he do that?" factor into my pieces while staying true to good design. Having lived my entire life near the Pacific Ocean, the motion and rhythm of the ocean's waves are a major inspiration for my work. Contrast is also an important element for me, not only aesthetically but in the process of turning a functional object, like a bowl, into an “object d’art.” Artistically I like to combine multiple woods with dyes and textures to enhance the rhythmic lines that are a part of my work. The technical genesis of these works lies in my ability to deconstruct and reconstruct a turned vessel in a number of different ways while maintaining grain and wall alignment. I hope that my pieces will evoke a feeling of movement and energy in an otherwise static environment."

Providing top quality exotics to artists such John is the reason we love doing what we do. Sourcing out rare and hard to find pieces of wood is one thing but "turning" them into amazing pieces of art is something entirely different. As we always say, "...we just sell the wood, it's our customers who have all the talent."

Below are some images from John website www.johnbeaver.net
