Large turnings by Harvey Fein

Here are a couple pictures of some fantastic pieces done by Harvey Fein from New Jersey

This piece was made out of a short cocobolo dead log section much like the one below.

What do we mean by "dead"?

Note that there is no sapwood in the log below-

New cambium or sapwood turns into heartwood as a tree grows. Once the tree has died naturally, the remaining cambium layer rots away as is the case with these cocobolo logs.

Where our cocobolo is harvested in Mexico, many times we come across these "dead" cocobolo trees either standing or on the ground. They make for nice large turnings since they are usually nice and dry and sap-free.

We usually have a few of these logs at the shop at all times, let us know if you have any other questions about them.
Here we see Harvey using one of our Jatoba Crotch slabs for another large turning. These pieces have some incredible figure and are great to work with.

We still have quite a bit of them so let us know if you are after something different and in larger dimensions, we can tell you what we have.

Jatoba Crotch Slabs

These are some nice Jatoba Crotch Slabs that are coffee table sized.

They are however 4-5" thick which maybe a little much for some people.

If you want thinner stock - check out-

Jatoba Crotch Slabs #1-3 or

Goncalo Alves Slabs #10 & 11

"Smaller" Jatoba Crotch Slabs

These are the smallest Jatoba Crotch slabs that we have in terms of thickness.

They are unsurfaced but you can still see the figure in most of them. They are too wide for our planer and belt sanding them all would take forever.

For examples of what the crotch figure looks like please refer to the pictures on our "slabs" page on our website.

Dimensions are on each picture.

Crotch Tops!

Crotch Slabs always look great for coffee tables, small end tables, bars, and if you can find one big enough, for dining or conference tables.

The best figure on most trees is always right were any two limbs separate from the main trunk.

This is were you find gorgeous feathery figure which often times includes a little curl, burl, spalt, quilt, bark inclusions, etc...

Its always a treat when we finally see a certain crotch slab thats been laying against our back wall in a finished piece. Crotch pieces never disappoint-they always look beautiful!

Here are various crotch slabs we have here at the shop that are just begging for a unique project.

This Bocote crotch piece is much like the finished piece above.

The top is where the crotch figure will be but the rest of the piece seems to have very interesting figure as well-as you can see in the picture even though its still rough sawn.

We think this one will look especially striking since it has a solid white sap line along all the edges.

Once sanded and finished the contrast between the dark heartwood and the white natural-edged sap, combined with the crotch figure will be very nice.

Here is a small Pink Ivory crotch slab.

If you know wood, you probably know Pink Ivory is one of the most sought after woods in existence.

So you can imagine how rare a slab like this is.

This one would make a great side table.

Match it up with some kind of ebony stand and you have a great looking table made out of high end African woods.

This is a nice long cocobolo crotch Slab.

This is Jatoba from Brazil. Nice wide example how big some crotch pieces can get

This is what we mean by feathery crotch figure.

This is an extreme example but you get the picture.

I guess this isn't exactly a crotch piece, but I figured I'd include it anyways since it still follows roughly the same shap.

WANT TO GO BIG???

We have about 3 or 4 of these monsters.

12 foot long Solid Jatoba Crotch Slabs.

We just sold a couple of these that will be set side by side "yin-yang" style- to make a massive table top.

It will also include solid Jatoba legs milled out of another Crotch Slab.

We can't wait to see the finished piece!
